From a young fashion student to a determined businesswoman, Asiphesona’s journey reflects resilience, innovation, and a passion for empowering others through fashion.
Asiphesona has turned AIAM Studio into a symbol of possibility for aspiring designers and her community. With a commitment to personalized, high-quality garments and a determination to educate others about the fashion industry, she is charting a course for both personal success and a brighter future for those around her.
Origin and Inspiration
A Vision Sparked by Family and Education
Asiphesona’s journey into fashion began in her college years, where she pursued a degree in fashion design. But the seeds for her entrepreneurial spirit were sown much earlier. “Growing up in a household dominated by strong women had a significant influence on me,” she reflects. “Both of my grandmothers back home started their own businesses and built remarkable reputations through their hard work and skills.”
This legacy of determination and independence became a guiding light for Asiphesona. While studying fashion, she became increasingly aware of its potential to contribute to the South African economy, and the idea of owning her own business resonated deeply. “I see a great chance to educate my peers and community about the field and its potential,” she adds.
Her first experience working with a client cemented her passion for creating bespoke garments. “I was in my second year of college when I was introduced to my very first client. I didn’t have much confidence in my abilities back then, but her trust in me was incredibly motivating. When we brought her design to life, we were both thrilled with the result.”
Business Overview
Creating Custom Garments and Unique Experiences
AIAM Studio, Asiphesona’s fashion brand, specializes in custom garment creation, clothing restyling, and alterations. What sets her business apart is the close collaboration she fosters with her clients. “We embrace a wide range of designs without restrictions,” Asiphesona explains. “Whether it’s eveningwear, traditional attire, or casual outfits, our goal is to deliver exactly what our customers envision.”
Her background as a fashion design student brings an academic edge to her work. “I have up-to-date knowledge of trends, textiles, fabrics, and sewing techniques, which I apply directly to the business. It’s a competitive advantage that sets us apart from other businesses,” she notes.
While AIAM Studio is still in the process of building its website, the business is active on social media platforms like Instagram, aiam_studio, and TikTok, ayathembisa. They also offer promotions, such as discounts for matriculants, recognizing the high costs associated with planning matric dances.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
Balancing Business and College
Starting a business while still in school came with significant challenges for Asiphesona. Time management was one of her biggest hurdles, but transparency and trust helped her navigate those waters. “Being transparent with my clients about my school schedule proved beneficial. Most of them placed their orders well in advance, which gave me the time I needed to fulfill them,” she recalls. Additionally, she began working on alterations during breaks between classes to stay on top of deadlines.
Like many young entrepreneurs, Asiphesona also initially believed that external funding was necessary to make significant progress. However, she quickly realized that resilience and resourcefulness could carry her just as far. “There were several moments when I felt like giving up, especially with my first client. But the support from my family and the understanding nature of my clients helped me push through.”
Business Strategy
From Bootstrapping to Growth
AIAM Studio was initially funded through bootstrapping, using the sewing machine Asiphesona purchased for school. She gradually invested in essential supplies, such as needles and threads, and continues to operate this way while waiting for potential external funding.
For marketing, AIAM relies heavily on word of mouth and social media, which has proven effective. “Most of our customers were referred by family and friends, while others discovered us through social media,” she explains. These organic growth strategies have been instrumental in building her brand and attracting new clients.
Learning and Growth
Building a Support System
Running a business has taught Asiphesona the importance of collaboration and asking for help. “I’m a fashion designer, but I’m not an expert in marketing, finance, or administration. That’s why it’s so important to create jobs and build a team of skilled professionals who specialize in different areas of the business,” she emphasizes.
She also highlights the importance of continuous learning. As a student of fashion design, Asiphesona applies her classroom knowledge directly to her business. “I learn about fashion trends through shows, social media, and research, but we also take cues from our clients’ unique ideas. It’s a collaborative process.”
Balancing Life and Work
Maintaining Passion and Purpose
Despite the demands of running a business and completing her studies, Asiphesona remains passionate about her work. “I love making clothes, and I love wearing what I’ve created, so at times, being a fashion designer feels effortless,” she says.
Her advice to fellow entrepreneurs is to always remember why they started their business. “That purpose will keep you going during tough times,” she advises. She also stresses the importance of building a support system and not trying to do everything on your own.
Reflection and Impact
Pride in Creation and a Vision for the Future
Asiphesona’s proudest moments come when she successfully brings a client’s vision to life. “The satisfaction of meeting a customer’s expectations is a feeling I never get tired of,” she shares. Looking ahead, she dreams of passing on her skills and knowledge to the next generation. “There are so many opportunities in the fashion industry that many people aren’t aware of, and I believe it’s AIAM’s responsibility to help educate and connect people with those opportunities.”
Her long-term vision is to expand AIAM Studio and establish a strong presence in the fashion industry, helping to educate her community on the vast opportunities within the field.
Looking Ahead
For now, Asiphesona is focused on improving her craft and gaining experience in the industry. She recently volunteered as a dresser for a fashion show to gain backstage experience and will soon be showcasing her work at her school’s annual fashion show. “It’s an exciting time for AIAM, and I’m looking forward to seeing where this journey takes me.”
As Asiphesona continues to navigate the entrepreneurial landscape, she remains grounded in her purpose and inspired by the women who came before her. With AIAM Studio, she’s not just creating garments; she’s crafting a legacy.
