Kamohelo Siphokazi Mphahlele is an inspirational figure dedicated to empowering South Africa’s youth through education, mentorship, and career development. As the Acting Manager of the FirstRand Foundation Bursaries Cluster and Career Development at StudyTrust, Kamohelo leverages her extensive experience and her Honours in Psychology from the University of Witwatersrand to enhance student support programs. Her passion for helping others navigate academic and professional challenges stems from her own journey, marked by resilience, empathy, and a commitment to uplifting others.
The Journey of a Mentor
Kamohelo’s path to mentorship began during her time at the University of Witwatersrand, where she tutored first-year psychology students transitioning from high school to university life. Reflecting on this pivotal experience, she shared, “What truly motivated me to become a mentor was the wish to fill someone else’s cup in the way I wished mine would have been filled during my own university journey and early career experiences.” This deeply personal connection to mentorship continues to fuel her drive to guide young people toward their potential.
Her passion for mentoring is rooted in the joy of witnessing mentees overcome challenges and take meaningful steps toward their goals. Kamohelo explained, “The most rewarding part about being a mentor is witnessing the growth and development of my mentees. Seeing them overcome challenges and become more confident in their abilities is fulfilling.”
Empowering Through Tailored Guidance
Kamohelo’s mentorship approach is uniquely tailored to each mentee’s needs. She begins by building trust and understanding their goals, challenges, and learning styles. This customization helps her create an empowering environment where mentees can navigate their paths confidently. She emphasizes, “While I offer support and guidance, I encourage the mentee to take ownership of the actionable steps, ensuring they are actively shaping their own path.”
However, she also acknowledges the challenges of mentorship, including managing mentees’ expectations. “It’s important not to make the mentee’s experience my own or to invest too much time in trying to fix their problems for them,” she shared, highlighting the balance required to maintain boundaries while providing meaningful support.
Lessons from Mentorship Success Stories
One of Kamohelo’s most impactful mentorship experiences was guiding Bathandwa Mtshikwana, a young woman with remarkable ambition but plagued by self-doubt. “I consistently focused on highlighting Bathandwa’s potential and offering reassurance during moments of uncertainty,” Kamohelo recalled. This support transformed Bathandwa, who emerged as a confident leader making a difference in community development and wellness.
This experience reaffirmed Kamohelo’s belief in the transformative power of mentorship. “It stands as a testament to the power of support, encouragement, and belief,” she reflected.
Continuous Growth as a Mentor
Kamohelo remains committed to her own growth as a mentor, seeking feedback from mentees and guidance from her peers. “I am constantly seeking advice and embracing new challenges to foster my own growth,” she shared. This commitment is rooted in her belief that mentors must also engage in self-discovery and professional development to better serve their mentees.
Additionally, she places great emphasis on emotional intelligence, a skill she continues to refine. “By understanding and managing my own emotions, I can be more empathetic and responsive to my mentees’ needs,” she explained. Her journey of self-awareness is ongoing, ensuring she remains an effective and compassionate mentor.
Advice for Aspiring Mentors
For those considering mentorship, Kamohelo offers practical and encouraging advice: “Reflect on what you have to offer. Everyone has unique experiences and insights that can help someone else. You don’t need an official title or a perfectly planned roadmap—mentorship often starts with a simple conversation or offering a listening ear.”
She encourages aspiring mentors to explore structured programs within their communities or even consider starting their own initiatives to make a difference.
