Relocating from Limpopo’s Venda region, the transition was anything but smooth. “My journey as a mentor began in my third year of university, inspired by my own experiences,” she reflects.
The challenges she faced in her early years at UCT were alleviated by the support of her mentor, a white female. This experience opened her eyes to the significant impact that mentorship can have on an individual’s journey. However, Suzan often thought about how powerful her experience could have been had she been mentored by a woman from her village. This realization sparked the creation of the “Sisterhood Mentorship” program in her third year. Through this initiative, she aimed to empower first-year female students from Venda, providing them with the support she wished she had received.

When selecting mentees, Suzan has a clear vision of what qualities she values. “I look for a genuine willingness to learn and grow,” she explains. “A mentee who demonstrates curiosity and eagerness to engage in the mentoring process is crucial for a productive relationship.”

Recognizing Kamo’s fierce determination, Suzan transitioned her from part-time to full-time within a year. “Even after she transitioned out of my direct management, we maintained our intentional focus on her growth and development,” Suzan reflects.
Kamo’s dedication paid off, as she progressed from a project officer to management, eventually becoming the youngest manager at her organization within just four years. “This journey exemplifies the profound impact mentorship can have, not just on individual careers but on the broader landscape of professional development,” Suzan notes with pride.
Commitment to Continuous Learning
For Suzan, personal growth as a mentor is equally important. She believes in the value of seeking guidance from experienced individuals. “Just as I provide support to my mentees, I recognize the importance of receiving mentorship myself,” she emphasizes.
